In a small town a strong family comes together to continue family traditions. On the family land, PaPa takes his daughter to a special place. Papa shows his daughter the tree he planted at the same age as her. As he teaches her the skills to take care of the tree he explains life lessons. Time goes by and the tree grows big and strong.
Papa receives test results in the mail from his doctor, the news is not well. He decides that this is the time to pass down a tree seed to his
grand daughter. This symbolizes that Gloria, his grand daughter has grown and has learned enough to carry on their family tradition.
Gloria is told about her father’s passing, she goes to his grave site. While grieving for her Papa, Gloria plants the seed he gave her next to the grave stone. Gloria takes care of this tree just the way her father taught her. She remembers all the time they shared together, and life lessons.
As time passes on the tree Gloria planted at her father’s grave stone grows, and so does Gloria’s family. She brings her daughter to Papa’s grave stone to show her the tree she has taken care of. Gloria continues the family tradition by taking a seedling from the plant and hands it to
her daughter.
The End
“The Family Tree” is a 2D animated short film. Silhouette style with paper cut out Puppet animation, with layers of textured matte paintings.
The layers provide more depth while still accomplishing a two dimensional “storybook” feel.
The background(s) color pallet will be split complimentary Warm set of colors Red-Orange tints, tones, and shades, and Green, with
Blue-Green, tints, tones, and shades. The silhouette layer will include texture and dark shades. Instrumental Music will guide the story along and bring the audience in to the characters experience.
The art direction, aesthetics, and color pallet of this film are both dynamic with high contrast. This style will support my story and let the
characters become the main focus.
The ultimate goal with creating this film is to communicate with others the importance of respecting your family and traditions, while providing a visually pleasing experience.
This films inspiration was mostly from a pioneer for Silhouette animation as well as aspiring women artist, Charlotte “Lotte” Reiniger. Reiniger was dedicated to her art work as well as determined, paving the way for so many others.
